Can You Prevent Gout By Drinking Coffee?

» Posted in gout remedies at 3:32 am

Drink coffee and prevent gout? What? That sounds like someone talking who’s had too much Starbucks! How could that be right? However, a 12 year study done involving 46,000 men showed promising results. Results reported in the online Health Day (News for Healthier Living) state that men who drink 4-5 cups of coffee daily have a 40% less chance of developing gout. Drinking 6 or more cups resulted in a 60% reduced risk!

Caffeinated coffee showed the best results and Health Day reports that coffee has a strong antioxidant called phenol chlorogenic acid which is attributed to lowering the risk of gout. This is not to discount the possible problems associated with drinking that much coffee.

Coffee lovers rejoice! Another reason to enjoy that cup of java. While drinking coffee is not the only thing you can do to prevent gout, the stats are a pretty convincing argument!

Are you aware that aromatherapy can be very effective in treating your arthritis pain? It’s pretty well known that many people use aromatherapy as a powerful mood enhancer and to bring relief to certain medical conditions. Aromatherapy uses the essential oils of plants which have many medicinal and healing benefits.

Arthritis sufferers can use the oil in several different ways. As a topical treatment or added to a warm compress on stiff and aching joints, your skin easily absorbs the healing oils. A Natural Remedy for Arthritis – Take A Mineral Bath!

» Posted in arthritis remedies at 3:28 pm

Another great natural remedy to help your arthritis is to take a mineral bath! Natural springs offer some of the most therapeutic baths straight from the earth. Minerals like sulfur, sodium, calcium and magnesium are found there.

Sulfur, which is found in every cell of the body contains cartilage and synovial fluid. People with arthritis generally have low sulfur levels in their joints. Bathing in sulfur –rich water helps relieve pain and may help with the formation of cartilage. It is also known as “nature’s beauty mineral” since it aids the body in making collagen for elasticity and young looking skin!

If you can’t make it to a natural spring then you can add it to your bath. Take 1 – 2 oz of potassium sulfate and add it to a full tub of water (about 30 gallons). The temperature should be between 95% and 102%F. Soak in it for 10 – 20 minutes. Hopefully you will notice some improvement right away.

A mineral rich combination of clay, anti-inflammatory herbs and paraffin wax is called fango. Fango is especially helpful for arthritis sufferers. The fango clay is heated and applied as a heat pack to problem joints and muscles. The clay molds to the body so that the botanicals and healing minerals (like sulfur) are absorbed into the skin. It also allows the body to rid itself of waste products as the pores open up and the capillaries enlarge, which increases metabolic activity and blood flow.

There Is Help For Ankylosing Or Lumbar Spondylitis

» Posted in arthritis remedies at 10:54 pm

Spondylitis, which causes degeneration of the spine, is an inflammatory disease that bends the vertebrae over a period of time. The spine stiffens, which affects how it is able to function. The inflammation may cause osteophytes, which are bone bridges to form. The osteophytes can fuse joints which used to be flexible. Aging usually causes degeneration to happen faster. Spondylosis can affect the neck (cervical), the middle-back(thoracic), and the lower-back(lumbar) areas in the spine.

Specifically the lower back or lumbar area is mostly affected by sponsylosis in people who are past 40 years of age. Most of the weight of your body is carried by your lower spine and so certain movements bring pain and stiffness. Often times stiffness and pain is reported in the back and buttocks in the morning after getting up. Movements that are commonly repeated, like bending and lifting can increase pain, as well as prolonged sitting as it puts pressure on the lower back.

More men than women are affected by spondylitis. It is recorded that 1 in 1,000 people contract it before they reach 40 years old. Males between the ages of 16 and 35 are the most common group to get it. Elderly men with an advanced state of it will be permanently bent spine and have a severly stooped posture. Other symptoms that can occur are chest pain when inhaling, fatigue, weight loss and lack of flexibility.

The good news is that there are effective alternative therapies that can naturally treat the problem, that you can begin using as a supplement to conventional drugs and treatments. It is often possible to switch over to the non toxic treatment as time goes on.

The natural therapies utilize natural pain management, detoxification, cartilage rebuilding , autoimmune system desensitizing, and stabilization.

The Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide covers these therapies in detail and can help you reverse the underlying causes of arthritis.

Does Leaky Gut Syndrome Cause Arthritis?

» Posted in arthritis causes at 3:53 pm

A lot of people that have arthritis also have some degree of abnormal digestive problem. These may include indigestion, constipation and leaky gut syndrome. In fact, leaky gut syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome often come before the start of arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Pathogenic bacteria takes over the intestine hindering digestion, nutrient absorption and the normal cycle of elimination. The bacteria also causes allergic reactions to food and eroding the membrane of the intestine, which is leaky gut syndrome. Diets that are low in fiber and high in refined sugar are also thought to contribute to causing the syndrome. Other factors that are considered to be involved in getting it are: using antibiotics, drinking alcohol, deficiency of zinc, candidiasis, parasite infections, bad digestion anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin.

What happens in a person with leaky gut syndrome is that the glue that keeps the mucous membrane of the intestinal walls together is compromised and gaping holes develop. Bacteria, toxins and semidigested food are able to escape through large openings between the intestinal cell membranes.

When the molecules of partly digested food escape into the bloodstream the immune system, which sees them as invaders. Allergic reactions occur and we get inflammation that spreads throughout the body. If a lot of particles and toxins go through the intestinal membranes, the immune system really kicks into gear and will start attacking healthy tissues of nearby joints and organs, heightening the adverse effects of arthritis.

The liver can also become overwhelmed by the toxins leaking into the bloodstream. The liver has a hard time breaking the toxins down and part of the detox process shuts down. Allergic reactions to food, inflammation and intestinal dysfunction seem to start a cycle that continues to repeat itself, causing more and more pain and serious consequences to the arthritis sufferer.

There are natural therapies that bring relief from this condition that do not rely on drugs. These include fasting, detoxification and changes in diet. This can ease some of the stress placed on the digestive system and start the process of healing. Enzymes, herbs and other nutrients will tone and soothe tissues that are inflamed and help bring the digestive process back to normal. Lastly, finding ways to reduce stress is important to lessen the release of stress hormones, which are a cause of inflammation.

What Is Causing My Gout?

» Posted in gout causes at 5:58 pm

If you have gout, you probably want to know what is causing it. The start of the majority of gout attacks start because of poor lifestyle choices including drinking too much alcohol, eating rich foods, and being overweight. However, about 10% to 15% of gout patients have it due to certain metabolic problems. A deficiency of certain enzymes ( like xanthine oxidase) that break down the purines can also be a cause. The body may also produce too many purines.

Purines exist in our DNA and RNA as a natural part of our body’s cells. The purines break down into uric acid, which then passes out through the urine. If you have too many purines, you have a problem with uric acid buildup. The uric acid which causes painful crystals to develop between the joints, hence causing gout.

There’s good news for those who can control their purine intake. Habits and conditions that increases the purine content in our body fluids can be changed. One of the primary factors in developing gout is drinking too much alcohol. Beer is especially high in purines, so think again before breaking out a “cold one”.You need to be careful of the foods that you eat. Avoid purine rich foods like organ meats, beans, soy, processed meats, milk, eggs and certain seafoods (like crab, mussels, and shrimp).Even being 15% overweight can cause gout to develop. We have the option to adopt a healthier diet and cut calories.

Kidney problems (like stones) also exist in about 90% of gout patients. The urate crystals also grow in the kidneys. You should be careful of taking too much acetominophen, aspirin and diuretic medications since they put extra stress on the kidneys.

The good news is that we do have control over what we put into our bodies. Certainly, gaining relief from the symptoms of gout should be a powerful motivator. Make it a goal to start eliminating the things that you know can cause gout.

What You Can Do To Prevent Gout

» Posted in arthritis remedies at 5:38 am

Preventing Gout

People who have gout are avidly seeking relief from their painful and debilitating gout attacks. The good news is that there are natural remedies for preventing gout. These remedies help reduce or eliminate the uric acid buildup which crystalizes in the joints to cause gout.

It can be as easy as drinking lemon juice after you eat. It neutralizes acids and flushes out the system with its vitamin C and antioxidants. To get the most juice from a lemon it is recommended that you roll it back and forth across a table several times before squeezing. To use for gout, squeeze the lemon into a cup of lukewarm water and drink it after meals.

High potassium foods contain electrolytes which help get rid of the acid crystals. High potassium vegetables to include in your diet are: potatoes, lima beans, pumpkin, beets, winter squash, spinach and asparagus. Fruits high in potassium are: cantaloupe, bananas, tomatoes, kiwi, honeydew apricots, oranges, avocados, and prunes.

A high fiber diet is recommended because it absorbs bile acids which can become uric acids.

Baking soda taken with meals can alkalize the body (1/2 teaspoon taken with meals gets rid of acid).

A couple of other things you can do is to elevate your leg. For men, having sex will reduce the uric acid levels in the body. Since the majority of people with gout are men, this is good news indeed!

Gout is thought to sometimes be hereditary, but it doesn’t have to flare up if you watch your diet carefully and take care of yourself. In fact, keeping your weight under control is important. Being overweight by 15% or more increases your chances of getting gout.

There are also supplements and enzymes that you can look into that can also bring relief or stave off an attack. Be encouraged that there is so much you can do for yourself that doesn’t include taking prescription medications and add the risk of serious side effects.

Gout Home Remedy – What Foods Not To Eat

» Posted in arthritis remedies at 2:29 am

Home remedies for gout should be seriously considered if you do not want to rely on prescription medications. The medications can cause potentially serious side effects.

Any good home remedy treatment program should include a strict adherence to diet. Purines, particularly need to be limited or avoided as they contribute to excess uric acid which is known to cause gout. If you can avoid prescription medications for gout by adopting the right diet, you can avoid a lot of the potentially serious side effects associated with it.

Foods that are high in purines and shouldn’t be eaten are soy products, sweetbread, mincemeat, beans, peas, liver, brain, kidney, anchovies, mackerel, mincemeat, scallops, crab, mussels, and shrimp.

Other ways to lower the risk of gout naturally are:

1. Avoiding drinking alcohol altogether or only rarely. Drinking a lot of alcohol increases the risk of hyperuricemia (high uric content), as the alcohol gets in the way of the natural removal of uric acids from the body. It should be avoided if you have gout and definitely if you are having an attack of gout. Beer has the the most purines and is the biggest offender.

2. Make sure to drink plenty of filtered water to flush the system of uric acids. Aim for around 2 liters of water a day, more if you are exercising or have a physical job.

3. Try to maintain a healthy weight. The more excess weight you are holding the more stress is then put on your joints increasing the possibility of gout.

4. If you need to lose weight, do not do so by rapid weight loss diets as they can increase uric acid levels in the blood. In weight loss also avoid low-carb diets as they are high in fat and protein. Consuming too much of these types of foods can increase your chances of developing hyperuricemia.

Freedom from pain, swelling and other gout symptoms can be a powerful motivator to stick to a good diet.

Gout Causes and What To Do To Get Rid of It

» Posted in gout causes at 6:00 pm

Gout is caused by excess build-up of uric acid. It’s a waste product of the urine cycle which leaves sharp crystals in the joints. Often appearing in the first joint of the big toe, they cause stiffness, swelling and heat. The crystals can also attack the ankles, knees, elbows and wrists.

Most of the time, an attack of gout happens suddenly and quickly and there are usually recurring bouts. The ear lobes, as well as the affected joints may have raised bumps on them from the crystal deposits. Gout can cause extreme pain, swelling, redness and fever that comes and goes, along with fatigue.

Having high levels of uric acid doesn’t automatically mean that you will have gout. Other factors like poor diet, kidney disease, metabolic problems and genetic factors enter into it. Most gout attacks begin because of poor choices in diet, like rich foods and alcohol.

Purine, which breaks down into uric acid can usually pass through the urine. Too much of it, however, can bring on attacks of gout. Purine content is increased by drinking alcohol, especially beer, as well as being obese. Eating too many purine-rich foods like milk, eggs, beans, soy products, and many meat products like processed meats, crab, shrimp, anchovies and liver also contribute to the problem.

Twenty-five percent of new diagnosis of gout have been linked to certain medications, like aspirin and diuretics. These medications cause gout due to the stress they place on the kidneys. In fact, about 90% of people with gout have kidney stones or other kidney problems since the urate crystals also collect there.

There are lots of things that you can do to help with your gout. The dandelion plant is helpful for gout, especially if taken over a period of time. You can make a juice with it combined with other vegetables and roots. Nettle leaf can be used daily for an acute attack , and works to prevent uric acid buildup if taken over a period of time. Drinking 2-3 quarts of filtered water every day can help with diluting the uric acid content. Ultimately, making better lifestyle choices, losing weight, and adherence to a plant based diet, along with no alcohol consumption is key to being successful in eliminating gout.
